The Journal

The Journal is the news and notes section of Chapters of Dublin. It is where the site posts announcements about the library, explains how readers can send in corrections and new material, and records changes to the collection as books are added or repaired.

Chapters of Dublin is a free online library of 1,012 chapters drawn from 39 books and collections on the history of Dublin, most of them published in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and now out of copyright. They range from parish-by-parish histories, such as F. Elrington Ball's History of County Dublin and Handcock's History of Tallaght, to memoirs like Jonah Barrington's Personal Sketches, and to street-by-street guides such as Dillon Cosgrave's North Dublin. First-hand accounts of the Easter Rising and a chronology of Dublin history sit alongside them.

Many of the pages were first published on the earlier Chapters of Dublin website and have been recovered and re-edited for this edition, so some still have gaps or transcription errors. If you notice a mistake, or you have an out-of-copyright book, photograph or map relating to Dublin that would suit the collection, the post below explains how to get in touch. To start reading, browse all chapters grouped by book.
