Accounts of the Easter Rising

First-hand accounts of the Easter Rising, the armed rebellion that began in Dublin on Easter Monday, 24 April 1916, and ended with the surrender of the insurgents later that week. The collection brings together writers on both sides of the conflict and civilians caught up in it.

Countess Markievicz, who served at St Stephen's Green with the Irish Citizen Army, describes the part played by women in the fighting, in a memoir from her Prison Letters (1934). Nora O'Daly gives an account of Cumann na mBan at St Stephen's Green and the Royal College of Surgeons. Lilly Stokes kept a day-by-day diary of the week as a Dublin civilian, and F. J. Cronin, visiting from Preston, described what he saw in an interview with the Preston Herald in May 1916. In contrast, "Inside Trinity College", written by one of its defenders for Blackwood's Magazine in July 1916, tells the story of the college held against the rebels.
