Women in the Easter Rising

The one video on this page, listed as women_1916, dealt with the part played by women in the Easter Rising. Like the rest of the gallery, the video itself was not preserved when the site was recovered, but the subject is well covered elsewhere on the site.

Women took part in the Rising chiefly through Cumann na mBan, the women’s organisation founded in 1914 alongside the Irish Volunteers, and through the Irish Citizen Army, which admitted women as members. They carried dispatches, ran first-aid posts and kitchens, and in some garrisons bore arms. Constance Markievicz, an officer of the Citizen Army, was second in command at St Stephen’s Green and the Royal College of Surgeons; she was sentenced to death afterwards, but the sentence was commuted because she was a woman. Winifred Carney, James Connolly’s secretary, was in the GPO throughout the week, and Dr Kathleen Lynn served as the Citizen Army’s chief medical officer. The nurse Elizabeth O’Farrell carried Patrick Pearse’s offer of surrender to the British commander and then delivered the surrender order to garrisons around the city.
