A year-by-year chronology of Dublin history, from Ptolemy’s Eblana and the Viking raids to the late twentieth century, divided into four period pages.
Each page lists dated entries in order, recording events in the city and county alongside national events that shaped Dublin: battles and politics, new buildings and institutions, fires, storms and floods, and the births and deaths of notable people. As the first page warns, the older the date, the more likely it is to be approximate.
- Up to 1699 begins with Roman knowledge of Ireland and Eblana on Ptolemy’s map, then follows the Norse kingdom of Dublin and its wars with Irish kings, the Norman arrival of 1169–70 and Henry II’s stay in 1172, Cromwell’s landing in 1649, and the Williamite war, ending with Trinity College’s centenary in 1694.
- 1700–1799 covers the penal laws against Catholics, Jonathan Swift’s years as Dean of St Patrick’s, the first performance of Handel’s Messiah, the founding of the Rotunda Hospital, the opening of the Custom House in 1791, and the 1798 rebellion.
- 1800–1899 runs from the Act of Union and Robert Emmet’s rising of 1803 through Daniel O’Connell, the Famine years, the Fenians and Parnell, to the arrival of trams, railways and new public institutions.
- 1900–2000 spans Queen Victoria’s 1900 visit, the Easter Rising, the War of Independence and Civil War, the Eucharistic Congress of 1932 and the ‘Emergency’, to the destruction of Nelson’s Pillar in 1966 and events of the 1990s.
